Level 2 - Games as art

Games As art timeline

This is a PowerPoint presentation of different games throughout the years. I have listed there developers and the year they where released.

Making Photoshop Brushes

These are images of custom brushes I made on photoshop using the brush editor using different opacities and brush types, then I used teh editor and uploaded them.

Ink Brushes

I have been making different brushes on photoshop, I used photoshop to make the first ten, I used the edit tool to edit what I wanted the brushes to look like and then used the the define brush tool to add it to my brush list, and the last five where made using ink and then took a picture and transferred it to my computer, then I rubbed out the excess i did want and used the define edit to add them to my brush list.

Creature Silhouettes
This is a selection of creatures I made using silhouettes, I used different brushes and opcaities and flow amounts to creat these. I started off by making random pasterns and working off of that and then will further develop them.

Similarities between games and Artists

                     Creatures Collage

These are a collage of creatures I made using photoshop. I found images online of natural environments and used the lasso tool to cut out shapes and import them onto another file, I then, using Ctrl+T resized and rotated, the pieces to make the collage, I choose to develop the bottom left creature, because it is, in my opinion, the better looking image. People voted for me to develop image one more than anything.

The creature Sketches

This is one of the creatures I have developed, I imported teh collage creature onto a page and then I I traced the outlines and filled in the details. It is meant to be a sort of deep sea water monster, I still need to finish it off at a later date.

Artists interpretations

This is my interpretation of Guillrm H. Pongiluppi, Star Wars art work. I started by drawing an outline of the creatures head and then working by going layer of colour by layer of colour using a variety of different brush sizes, opacityies and flows.

Final Creature Design

This is my final creature design, I used a variation of opacities and flows, I used a high flow and opcatities to create the creatures base body shape, I used lower opacity brushes to start adding colour and detail to the face and to the arms, I used the pen tool to create a clean cut for the wings. I used dark colours for the body and head but then I used contrasts to create brightly coloured arms. The glow on the arm was used by using a brush with 10% and 25% opacity and gradualy increase the amount of strokes of the area.

Pen Tool Experiment 1

This is a picture I have drawn using the pen tool, his name is Steve. I used different anchor points to make the head, the legs, the body and each of the arms and then I just coloured each selection.

Pen Tool Experiment 2

I used the pen tool to trace over the original shapes (in blue) and then I coloured mine in blue. This was to practice drawing lines with the pen tool.

Observational  drawings

These are drawings I did of my hands, by observing them and drawing them how I saw them, I did some of the hands using different challenges set by my tutor, I had to draw with my left hand and also with the pencil strapped to my elbow, chin, and knee.

Animal and Creature Drawing

These are drawings, I did using observational drawings methods the middle drawing was done with the drawing being covered up so I couldn't see the drawing and the last one is a creature that was developed from the original drawing. I chose to draw the badger skull because it seemed like a challenge but not too much of a challenge. I found the drawing without a cover easier than with the cover. The plate made it harder to draw because I couldn't tell where my pencil was on the drawing, I used a contour line to make the outlines of the skulls and creature.

Hand Creature (jimmy)

These images are of a creature I designed, I used the observational drawing of my hand to create the creature, which I decided to name Jimmy, I used different opacities and flows on my brushes to create different parts to the hand, I mainly used the pen tool to make the outlines neat and also to create the straight edges and spiked bits on the bone and nail.

Creature Backstory

Jimmy is a hand creature who moves from host to host replacing one hand for him, he then has full control over the host, he is evil, angry and merciless, he lives on people so he lives in multiple environments. Jimmy would usually be found in a horror or fantasy game, his diet is anything meat. Jimmy is called Jimmy because it makes him more human and adds to the creepy factor to him.

Hand Creature with lighting

This is the hand creature (above) with a strong orange, fire like light from the top left hand corner of the screen and also on the eye there is a red glow and a blue glow. I used low opacity brushes with varied flows to create where the light would be on the hand e.g on the side and on some of the bone. I then gradually made the hand darker and darker and in some places the hand is completely gone because of the shadow. the eyes glow was created with just a gradual high intensity to low intensity style of the same colour.

Calligraphic and Contour line Drawings

These are drawings that I did using calligraphy and contour lines. The image in the middle is one I did using calligraphy the other drawings where done normally using contour lines to bring out the detail in the tool.

Measurement Drawings

I had to use the thumb and pencil method to measure out how big the objects where to get the drawing to proportionally correct, I measured out the size of the small block first and then the camera and then the computer. I used the grid to measure out the computer to then make the camera and block.

Lighting Drawings

These drawings I did are showing how I have identified where the light will hit the object and see the tone of the shadow on the object and then the sharpener is drawn with the light coming from the top right of the object.

Lighting Pictures

This task was one where we had to use a torch and a camera with some black paper.

This lamp has used a subtle light in the lower mid, this could create an effect of mystery because it will create an eerie shadow on a face.

This image uses a silhouette in the background to create an ominous light making the lamp shadowed. This can be used to make a very mysterious or horror feeling.

This picture uses a high key light from the top mid to create a very sci-fi feeling image, this lighting leaves the image with no shadowing and not much detail shown e.g contour lines.

This image uses an unnatural light source from the top of the image, the light is very strong and does not leave many shadows or contorts.

Analysis of Blog

This blog is about the creature design project. I created many pieces of work/art to improve on my art skills so that I could create my creature (Jimmy). Jimmy was a creature that I created using the observational drawing of my hand, he was meant to be a very creepy, horrifying creature (he does look very horrific in my opinion). Jimmy was very influenced by artists such as Guillermo Del Toro, who did the concept art for Pans Labyrinth and the artist H.R Giger who did the art for the Alien movies. The issues I had with the reasrch was that most artists have foreign names so it was hard to find them and also I couldn't find them on normal forums because it was other peoples work.I needed different art styles, and different artists interpretations of games to see how different artists would have done the creature to help make it easier with the design. My primary reasarch was when I did the ink splats to create my own brushes for the creature, also my light pictures provided additional skills to help with the lighting on Jimmy. My observational drawings helped me to get the perspectives on the creature correct. I used ink to create my custom brushes and also used a variety of pencils to create my perspective and also to create my lighting pictures.. I used photoshop to create all my art work.

I don't really like how the fingers didn't look how fingers should look, they where not long enough to be in proportion, next time I should look more clearly and look at how proportions of the body would look. I really liked the outcome of the whole thing at the end of the project, what Jimmy looks like now is something I thought I could never acheive. I could have made it easier if I used bigger brushes on the shading to cover more of an are instead of using a small brush. I would spend more time making sure everything is smoothed off and also all the little details I missed. I have done resarch and the evidence is all of the different drawings I did such as my perspective drawings. I think I managed time fairly well, because I got all the work done on time. I experimented a lot doing different stuff to my creatures and added lots or took away parts to them.
